The opening statement got my attention immediately, with its reference to Star Trek. Everything seems a bit odd or weird. I of course think that artists are weird to begin with. Curator Cait Finley gave each artist one page of a short and sweet book, in PDF format, to create something larger. This concept goes hand-in-hand with artist collective Tiger Strikes Asteroid growing horizontally rather than vertically, and developing a national network of artists instead of a singular gallery space.

Finley is asking the audience to print out work and display pieces in their own spaces, inviting the viewer to express themselves through the artists in the show. I think this type of show should become more commonplace, allowing art to be more available to the masses. In turn, this can help educate people to art’s cultural significance for society.

The opportunities of sharing artwork through easily disseminated shows, like this, are immense. You could possibly set the show up in a neighborhood park, on your front porch, or even in your favorite neighborhood hardware store like Rollier’s. I don’t think Rollier’s would object to it.

More cultural organizations should be working like Tiger Strikes Asteroid, with the objective of making artwork attainable and accessible to the public. Unconventional as it may be, this type of show has more relevance now than a prestigious show in a closed museum.

Check out the show @tsa_pdf, print it out, and send photos to pdf@tigerstrikesasteroid.com pay-as-you-wish, with all proceeds going to @artistrelief + the artists #tigerstrikesasteroid
